Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
