As any significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
